NRMCA’s Lionel Lemay and Brandon Wray presented Sustainable Concrete: How to Reduce, Quantify and Specify Carbon to over 400 structural engineers via webinar on July 24. The session examined how early collaborative decision‐making and the use of performance‐based specifications can empower project teams to include embodied carbon targets alongside cost, performance and schedule to create a holistic bidding and procurement process that supports sustainability goals. The presentation focused on establishing a carbon budget for projects using NRMCA’s Concrete Carbon Calculator. The webinar, delivered on Structure magazine’s continuing education platform, was sponsored by NRMCA’s Build With Strength initiative.

Buildings

Earlier this month, Build With Strength Director, Building Innovations, Justin McCain met a group of Austin, TX, engineers to promote concrete for city projects. He demonstrated how they can achieve their sustainability goals through consistent specifications and partnering with ready mixed concrete producers early in the design process. Austin plans to require Environmental Product Declarations for projects in 2025 and McCain provided feedback with NRMCA benchmarks and reasonable reduction goal estimations for officials' considerations.

He said he aimed to send a clear message: materials cannot be considered sustainable if they are not also resilient. Concrete is the material of choice because of its long-term durability and unique capability to accomplish the sustainability goals of projects. He also introduced the available services offered by the BWS team to the design-build community, including specification reviews, life cycle assessments and concrete design assistance. The meetings provided valuable insight for the engineers along with guidance on how adopting performance-based specifications will maximize the ready mixed concrete industry’s ability to deliver achievable results.

NRMCA’s Pave Ahead program is pleased to announce the release of its third flyer in the Enhancing Concrete’s Performance series. The new flyer, Fiber-Reinforced Concrete, introduces the basics of fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) and provides guidelines for the mixing and placing of FRC.

“The Enhancing series is intended to educate project owners and specifiers to better understand the nuances of ready mixed concrete,” said Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge. Previous publications in the Enhancing Concrete’s Performance series include Texturing of Concrete Parking Lot Pavements and Jointing.

The series is available for download under the Concrete Parking tab. For more information, or if there is a topic you would like to see covered in future publications, contact Phil Kresge at pkresge@nrmca.org.
