NRMCA’s Lionel Lemay will moderate an online panel on Concrete Mix Optimization during the Portland Cement Association (PCA) Sustainability Summit on August 13. This expert panel will discuss the concept of mix design optimization as one way to reduce concrete’s carbon footprint. It will highlight the tremendous CO2 saving opportunities of reducing the total paste volume of concrete while simultaneously using high performance, low‐clinker cements. The panel will discuss the use of SCMs, admixtures and aggregate gradation among other strategies. It will also discuss methodologies and tools used to conduct plant-level analytics, including EPDs to optimize mixtures for performance and carbon footprint. The panel of experts are:
The PCA Sustainability Summit takes place from August 13 - 15, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern time and includes topics on cement, concrete, construction, carbonation and carbon capture. Representatives of the ready mixed concrete industry recently participated in a public outreach effort hosted by the District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) that focused on Low Carbon Transportation Materials (LCTM) and held in conjunction with the Federal Highway Administration’s LCTM program team providing training to DDOT officials. NRMCA Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Phil Kresge joined NRMCA members Jan Holt, Chaney Enterprises; Tek Chua, Vulcan Materials; and Rene’ Marais and Henry Prenger, both from Holcim. A prime focus for DDOT is to incorporate Environmental Product Declarations (EPD’s) into its projects. Kresge shared that the ready mixed concrete industry has been very proactive regarding sustainability, explaining that NRMCA has been on the leading edge in producing EPD’s. He also cited the work of the Concrete Sustainability Hub (CSH) at MIT, the Reduced Carbon Concrete Consortium (RC3) and the Concrete Advancement Foundation. DDOT is due to receive at least $22 million, and possibly as much as $30M-$40M, through an LCTM grant from FHWA to implement low carbon materials strategies. Kresge offered the services of NRMCA, CSH and the Foundation to assist in education, outreach and implementation. For more information, contact Phil Kresge at pkresge@nrmca.org. Learning & Development
For two decades NRMCA’s Developing Industry Leaders program has fostered cohorts of talented and knowledgeable leaders in the concrete industry. The Association aims to ensure that this program continues to provide members with value and the tools that they need to push themselves and the entire industry forward. To achieve this goal, NRMCA’s Learning and Development Team has decided to temporarily pause this year’s Developing Industry Leaders program so that it can be improved and revitalized for its return in 2025. The driving force behind this reimagining of the program will be the voice of the members. On Sunday, October 13, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Mountain Time during ConcreteWorks, members can participate in the Future Leaders Reimagined workshop to express their desires and suggestions for the future of the program. Click here to attend this workshop. Members may also contact Senior Vice President, Learning and Development, Jeannette Munroe at jmunroe@nrmca.org or 703-706-4864 to discuss the program. Members are encouraged to attend the Learning and Development team’s Educational Offerings Highlight session at ConcreteWorks on Saturday, October 12, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Mountain time. This event will permit an exchange of information and ideas between NRMCA’s members and its education specialists who are currently designing the Association’s new curriculum. During this session, speakers will discuss upcoming educational offerings in 2025 and the ways in which the overall NRMCA learning and development program is evolving. This session will be hosted by Senior Vice President, Learning and Development, Jeannette Munroe. Member insight and clear communication are the highest priorities of the Association’s Education Department in designing the future of its courses and content. This ConcreteWorks session is one of many chances in which members will be able to provide feedback and learn about the ongoing reimagining of the educational programs. Members are also welcome to reach out directly to Senior Vice President of Learning and Development, Jeannette Munroe by phone or email to discuss their thoughts on the Association’s educational content. The Learning and Development Team looks forward to a productive and enlightening dialogue with the members. Click here to attend the event. The staff contact is Jeannette Munroe at jmunroe@nrmca.org or 703-706-4864. Calendar
