The estimated ready mixed concrete produced in May is 35.1 million cubic yards, 8.2% lower than in May 2023. The estimated production in the U.S. through May is 147 million cubic yards, approximately 3.5% lower than that during the same period in 2023.

Ready mixed concrete production is estimated from cement shipments reported by the U.S. Geological Survey. More detail is available here for NRMCA members under Production Statistics.

NRMCA, through its Build With Strength initiative, is a top sponsor for the Net Zero 2024 Conference to be held at the Anaheim Convention Center just outside Los Angeles on September 17 - 18. The event convenes climate leaders to collaborate on global solutions for change in the built environment. The event is a hub for people in the construction industry to gather, bridge knowledge gaps and inspire a net zero future.

NRMCA will exhibit at the conference to promote low-carbon concrete strategies, performance-based specifications and NRMCA’s Concrete Design Center. Brandon Wray of NRMCA will head a panel discussion titled Sustainable Concrete: How to Reduce, Quantify and Specify Carbon. Other panelists include Jessie Buckmaster, Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company and Jim Little of NRMCA Producer member National Ready Mixed Concrete Company. Lionel Lemay of NRMCA will participate on a panel discussion of decarbonizing building materials. NRMCA’s Patrick Matsche will also represent the Build With Strength team at the event.

Visit www.netzeroconference.com for more details or contact Lionel Lemay at llemay@nrmca.org.

The General Services Administration (GSA) along with Department of Energy (DOE) has issued a Request for Information (RFI) for technologies that increase sustainability of buildings. They are investing $30 million of Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) funds to facilitate the testing of innovative technologies through GSA’s Center for Emerging Building Technologies. By testing new building technologies in federal buildings, these programs help GSA make smarter investments and enable and encourage wider market adoption of clean energy innovations.

NRMCA and the Concrete Advancement Foundation have published the August 2024 Investigation for the Validation of Increased Rebar Spacing in Concrete Walls. The report, authored by Dr. Julian Mills-Beale, NRMCA director, codes and standards, explores the possibility of optimizing rebar area and spacing in reinforced concrete walls, including insulated concrete form (ICF) walls commonly used in low- and mid-rise construction.

The research is intended to benefit industry through more sustainable and economic concrete wall designs based on reinforcement ratios with increased spacing. The report documents initial findings with further investigations being considered for the next phase. The report is available for download from the Foundation’s website or NRMCA’s website.

The NRMCA Codes and Standards teams manages research projects in collaboration with the Concrete Advancement Foundation to support its codes and standards advocacy efforts. For more information regarding the rebar spacing study, contact Dr. Julian Mills-Beale at jmills-beale@nrmca.org.

Earlier this month, various national governmental agencies including the EPA, the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and White House Office of Science Technology Policy hosted a daylong meeting of various Midwest stakeholders interested in shaping the future of low-carbon concrete construction in Chicago. The event was organized by the Rocky Mountain Institute and the National Resources Defense Council and introduced a national tiered pledge program that encourages both providers as well as buyers of ready mixed concrete materials to commit to lower carbon strategies.

Government Affairs

NRMCA will partner with the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association and the National Asphalt Pavement Association for the 2024 Legislative and Policy Forum (LPF) taking place September 26 in Washington, DC. The LPF is the annual fly-in for industry participants to convene and collaborate in telling the concrete, aggregate and asphalt industries’ stories and to promote policies that are jointly important to our industries.

The ready mixed concrete industry is effective on Capitol Hill because of the relationships and contacts our members foster with their elected officials – both at home and here in Washington. Please make plans to attend this important event and advocate for the concrete industry to the Members of Congress who represent your company’s footprint.

This year at the LPF we will be advocating on issues related to Buy America, infrastructure funding and a material-neutral approach to federal construction programs. Special emphasis is placed on ensuring that every meeting is a productive visit to a relevant Congressional office so that your valuable time is converted into important relationships.
