Buildings
Last week, NRMCA Senior Director, Building Innovations, Frank Mruk met with Providence, RI, Mayor Brett Smiley, Providence Department of Planning and Development Director Joseph Mulligan III and Ken Filarski of the Rhode Island chapter of the American Institute of Architects to discuss plans for the city's resiliency, sustainability, design excellence, and planning and development strategies. (Mruk is seen here, second from left, along with Mulligan at far left, Smiley to the right of Mruk and Filarski at far right.) Providence offers a wide range of programs and services to residents, businesses and non-profit organizations to create strong and vibrant neighborhoods, support job creation and stimulate the economy. The city’s amended Comprehensive Plan was approved on October 21 and the City Council is expected to vote on November 7. On October 28, Build With Strength Director, Building Innovations, Justin McCain hosted the Texas Low Carbon Concrete Roundtable in Houston, aiming to educate stakeholders on sustainable concrete successes throughout Texas and to encourage them to build with concrete to maximize longterm value and resilience. NRMCA partnered with several members and industry experts to deliver the event to a group of approximately 50 attendees (seen here) who included ready mix producers, material manufacturers, architects, engineers, owners, general contractors and consultants. Notable attendee companies included Ash Grove Cement, Bechtel, the Cement Council of Texas, Chryso, Fluor, Kirksey Architecture, Koy Concrete, Matagorda Concrete, Page and Texas Lehigh Cement.

NRMCA's Ready Mixed Concrete Delivery Professional Driver of the Year Award, now in its 29th year and sponsored by the Truck Mixer Manufacturers Bureau (TMMB), acknowledges the significant contribution of ready mixed concrete truck drivers to the growth and success of individual companies and the ready mixed concrete industry. As a salute to these key members of the concrete production and delivery team, the award recognizes the driver’s career achievement, safety, professionalism, competence and customer service skills in a manner that will enhance the industry and public image of the career of Ready Mixed Concrete Delivery Professional. The winner will be honored at an awards presentation ceremony at NRMCA’s Annual Convention in Tucson, AZ, in March 2025. Applications must be e-mailed to DOY@nrmca.org by November 30.
Pavement
NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Greg Halsted and Clay Slocum, director of engineering with the California Nevada Cement Association (CNCA), recently hosted an Open House on an active roller-compacted concrete (RCC) pavement project in Chico, CA. Held on October 29 on the Bruce Road Reconstruction project, the event attracted approximately 50 individuals (seen here), including local Concrete Industry Management program students, regional, city and county public works officials, designers, engineers and even a few local homeowners, Halsted said.
