NRMCA is looking for good men and women to serve on the Board of Directors. While serving on the Board requires both commitment and energy, it is a rewarding opportunity to give back to the industry. NRMCA represents a broad range of ready mixed concrete companies across the United States and our success is a direct result of the skills and expertise of our professional staff working in conjunction with our Board members. Director nominees must be committed to promoting NRMCA programs and working in the best interest of its membership and the industry at large. The Board provides strategic direction, fiduciary oversight and governance of the organization’s operations.
Nominees are vetted by the Nominating Committee, which consists of the current chairman, immediate past chairman and past chairmen of the Board for the previous seven years who are still active in the industry. The selected slate of nominees is then presented to, and elected by, the general membership and will serve a three-year term that begins immediately following the Annual Convention in 2019.
Please click here for more information that includes links to a list of current Board members, Board job description and nomination form. Nominations are due by Friday, July 20. You may also contact Heather Houck at hhouck@nrmca.org for more information.

A new topic in the NRMCA Technology in Practice (TIP) series is now available: TIP 19 – Reuse of Returned Concrete provides general guidance and options used in the industry to manage returned concrete. This TIP also discusses the option for top loading materials on a returned load to generate a new load, with the cautions that are necessary to ensure that concrete meets the purchaser's requirements. The details of a new ASTM specification on returned concrete, ASTM C1798, are outlined in this TIP.
TIPs are developed by the NRMCA Research Engineering and Standards (RES) Committee and are intended as an educational resource for ready mixed concrete industry personnel. Each of the TIPs can be previewed on NRMCA's Web site.
The next NRMCA Concrete Durability Course will be offered on May 22-24, 2018 at the Brookhaven College in Farmers Branch (Dallas area), TX. The course is taught by Michael Thomas, University of New Brunswick, Kevin Folliard, University of Texas at Austin and NRMCA Engineering staff. The course provides a fundamental understanding of the nature of cement and concrete as they relate to durability of concrete. Topics will cover cracking, alkali aggregate reactions, sulfate attack, corrosion of reinforcing steel, freeze-thaw durability and other aspects. A group exercise will be facilitated to familiarize attendees with NRMCA's Concreteworks software used for mass concrete and service life prediction. The course also discusses the durability provisions in the Building Code - ACI 318-14 and how specifications can be structured to address durability. Comprehensive reference material is provided as course notes that is an excellent resource to concrete producers and associated technical personnel.
Those with the NRMCA Level 3 Certification obtain the NRMCA Concrete Technologist Level 4 Certification when passing the exam offered with the course. It is not essential to have attended the NRMCA Technical Short Course to attend the Durability Course. The course provides required learning units toward the technical track of the NRMCA STEPS certification program. Persons interested in attending this course are encouraged to register as soon as possible.

The concrete paving industry, represented by Angela Folkestad, PE, executive director, and Jamie Johnson, PE pavement engineer, American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) CO/ WY Chapter and Don A. Clem, PE, NRMCA vice president, local paving, recently met with the public works leadership of the City of Aurora, the third largest city in Colorado. They discussed the future of concrete pavement in the city, and how to improve communications between the concrete industry and Aurora city officials. The meeting was facilitated by Councilman Bob Roth and included the deputy city manager, public works director, manager public works operation, deputy director public works and transportation project delivery manager. Each of them agreed to work together to improve the performance of concrete pavement in the city.
ACPA and NRMCA are already assisting the city with a concrete pavement preservation project: East 32nd Avenue, in north Aurora.

NRMCA Opposed Provisions NOT Included in Farm Bill - In a victory for NRMCA and coalition partners, the 2018 Farm Bill, which was made public late last week, did not include the full text of the Timber Innovation Act (TIA). In particular, the bill did not include language authorizing a Tall Wood Building Competition – something the wood industry has been pushing hard. This bill seeks to use taxpayer funds to promote the use of wood in the high-rise building market.
Despite this good news, NRMCA is stepping up its opposition to the TIA and its inclusion in the 2018 Farm Bill. Last week, NRMCA hosted a conference call to reactivate the Stop the Timber Innovation Act Coalition and NRMCA is working closely with members of the House Agriculture Committee ahead of this week's committee meeting to consider amendments to the Farm Bill.
Take Action to Keep Congress from Replacing Concrete with Wood - As NRMCA Government Affairs staff lobbies this issue with Congress, we need you to make your voice heard. Here are two ways to help:
The Transportation Construction Coalition (TCC) Fly-In will take place May 15-16 at the Grand Hyatt Washington in Washington, DC. NRMCA will host a government affairs event the morning of May 15, with the official TCC program beginning that afternoon. In conjunction with the TCC Fly-In, NRMCA will also host a DC Days for NRMCA members, so please let us know if you are attending so we can begin to request meetings for you. This is an opportunity to lobby for issues important to our industry, including infrastructure and opposition to the Timber Innovation Act.
Make your reservations directly with the Grand Hyatt by calling 888-421-1442. Mention TCC Fly-In for the discounted $329 per night room rate. Cut-off date is April 20. You can register for the TCC Fly-In here.
