Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is second to corrosion as the leading cause of the premature deterioration of concrete structures in North America. Dr. Michael Thomas, professor of civil engineering, University of New Brunswick, will present a new test method which was developed in order to better predict expansion in real structures. This was achieved by developing a test where alkali leaching is minimized by placing concrete cylinders in a solution matching the internal pore solution of the concrete under test. Long-term results up to and including 900 days are presented for a number of aggregates and compared to long-term performance data from exposure sites in Austin, Ottawa and Fredericton.
This Webinar, titled Development of a Rapid and Reliable Test Method to Better Predict ASR in the Field, is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required. Click here to register.
As you may know, a new Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulation governing exposure to respirable crystalline silica is set to take effect on Saturday, June 23. In anticipation of the upcoming deadline, NRMCA has created an industry-specific silica compliance guide that aims to help give ready mixed concrete producers the necessary tools to assess their exposure and determine what steps may need to be taken to maintain compliance.
Click here for the guide and here to view other OSHA silica rule materials. For more information, contact Gary Mullings at gmullings@nrmca.org or Kevin Walgenbach at kwalgenbach@nrmca.org.
Does your facility need to report to the Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) Program? Have you run the calculations to determine if your facility does? Do you know what the requirements are and/or how to report if necessary?

A record number of interested visitors stopped at the NRMCA booth last week at the International Conference of Shopping Centers (ICSC) RECon conference in Las Vegas, reports Senior Vice President, Local Paving, Jon Hansen. "Even though attendance and booth numbers were down, our lead generation activity was up over 40%,” said Hansen who was joined at the booth by fellow NRMCA senior vice president Phil Kresge and Nathan Forrest, pavement engineer with California Nevada Cement Association (CNCA).
