NRMCA’s local paving engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will present a 2-day Design of Concrete Pavements course in the Cincinnati/Covington, KY area beginning December 6. This course will provide instruction on how to design and detail concrete pavements used in highways, streets and parking lots by considering the traffic loads, soil conditions and resulting pavement stresses

The ICC 2021 Code Proposals Public Comment Hearings will take place from October 24 - 31 in Richmond, VA. While there are many relevant proposals involving the ready mixed concrete industry, the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) is prepared to take action on three issues it considers to be of particular importance: valet trash, tall wood buildings and exterior wall fire spread. NASFM has developed position statements for each, including the issue, background, and recommended actions. Please see the corresponding links below:

NRMCA Senior Director, Local Paving, Luke McHugh recently spoke on Successful Concrete Pavements in Northern Climates at the New England Public Works Expo in Boxborough, MA. Examples included local road projects from Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. One particular example highlighting concrete’s durability was a ¼-mile section of Westbound Route 20 that approaches the intersection with Route 31 in Charlton, MA. The concrete pavement, which is on a steep downhill gradient and heavily traveled by large commercial vehicles, is 20+ years old while the asphalt intersection pavement has been milled and replaced twice since initial construction. In attendance were public works directors and engineers from towns throughout the region.

There are a few seats left for NRMCA’s annual Concrete 101 class. It is taught by NRMCA's Engineering Department and is an introduction to concrete fundamentals for those who need a broad overview of technical and operations essentials. The curriculum is appropriate for sales reps, dispatchers, administrative/home office and mid-level staff as well as those in executive functions whose jobs do not relate to concrete per se, but who should have knowledge of the industry. This class is NOT appropriate for technical ready mixed concrete personnel.
The workshop will be held October 9-11 at the RMC Research & Education Foundation Center in Silver Spring, MD. The attendees’ exam will be the morning of October 12. For those working toward their NRMCA STEPS® CCPf certification in Sales and Marketing Track, this is a required class. For others working toward CCPf certification in other STEPS tracks, the class is the qualifying prerequisite or an elective.

Two required classes in the STEPS career certification program will run this Fall. They are:
Fall 2018 Safety Course, October 16-18, Glendora, CA - This 2.5-day course teaches participants about OSHA safety compliance, beginning with why safety is so important and details the reasons why an effective safety program actually saves money through loss prevention and control. Participants learn about electrical safety, machine guarding, fall protection, hazard communication, confined spaces, personal protective equipment, firefighting and evacuation, maintenance shop safety, chute handling, fleet safety, pre-trip inspection and more. There will also be a special emphasis on OSHA's new silica regulations.
