Just as millennials caused retailers to make dramatic shifts in how they operate, Generation Z will be no different, says Lisa Malat, chief operating officer of Barnes & Noble College. Broadly speaking, members of Gen Z were born around 1995 through 2012. The youngest are in elementary school while the oldest have graduated from college.
It all started with a request from Lululemon to bring the power of a mobile application into the store environment. The apparel retailer’s online customers could browse for products across its entire inventory, and the company saw big advantages in enabling that same experience for shoppers in the store.

Pradeep Elankumaran is CEO and co-founder of Farmstead, an artificial intelligence-powered digital micro-grocer hoping to reinvent the supermarket model through technology. Operating from a small warehouse near its customer base, Farmstead’s priority is local food delivered from farm to fridge in under an hour.
California Closets has spent several years renovating and relocating about half of its approximately 130 showrooms, with a goal of transforming all within a year or two. Already, the change to what the company calls “Showroom 2.0” is paying off with increased order sizes.

Eighty-six percent of Americans plan to celebrate Independence Day this year, spending $6.7 billion on food items, according to NRF’s annual survey.
