The New York state housing market continued its strong start to 2010 as second quarter sales, helped by a record-setting June sales total, jumped more than 71 percent from the first quarter, according to preliminary single-family sales data accumulated by the New York State Association of REALTORS.

New York REALTORS sold 24,327 existing single-family homes in New York State during the 2010 second quarter, an increase of 71.3 percent from the 2010 first quarter. The sales total represents a 30.9-percent increase compared to the 2009 second quarter. The June 2010 sales total of 11,230 was up 66.2 percent from the May 2010 total of 6,758 and 46.8 percent from June 2009.

The 2010 second quarter statewide median sales price of $204,450 represents an increase of 11.7 percent from a year ago and a 5.4-percent decrease from the 2010 first quarter. The June 2010 median sales price of $220,750 represents an increase of 19.3 percent compared to the June 2009 median.

New York State Secretary of State Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez will resign effective August 31 to take a position as executive vice president at AARP in Washington, D.C. She was appointed by former Gov. Eliot Spitzer in 2007.

Under the leadership of Cortés-Vázquez, the Department of State invested nearly $130 million in 622 projects across the state, regulated the security and real estate industries, revitalized waterfronts and downtowns to promote smart growth and more. During her tenure as secretary of state, the DOS Division of Licensing Services adopted the eAccessNY system to manage real estate licensing applications, renewals, exams and changes.

The New York State Association of REALTORS, in partnership with the Siena Research Institute (SRI) released the first-ever quarterly New York State Consumer Real Estate Sentiment scores for the 2010 second quarter. Overall, the survey found New York consumers are negative about the current real estate market, but optimistic about the future. They feel that it is a very good time to buy, but a poor time to sell. Selling prospects increase over the next year and buying remains positive, indicating high hopes for the future of the New York real estate market.

The State of New York Mortgage Agency (SONYMA) has announced a number of changes including a new website home page that reflects the collaboration of New York’s housing agencies. In addition, there are changes to the Pool Insurer Commitment time frames; Approved Project Set‐Aside website list; Project Set‐Aside builder/developer/sponsor information form; Hazard Insurance coverage for condominiums; and a revised Hazard and Flood Insurance Certificate.
