The recently released National Association of REALTORS "Profile of Real Estate Firms" report found that 95 percent of all firms are expecting their net income to either increase or stay the same in the next year. The typical residential real estate firm's brokerage sales volume was $5.6 million in 2014, while the typical commercial firm's brokerage sales volume was $4.4 million. Read the complete study here.
The New York State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council has a scheduled meeting in Albany on August 19, 2015, at 10 a.m. where a decision could be made regarding the proposal to mandate the installation of residential fire sprinkler systems in all new one and two-family homes and townhomes. A decision regarding the mandate was postponed at a May meeting. NYSAR continues to oppose the pending proposal and supports consumer choice and incentives such as a tax credit proposal to offset installation costs (A.4227/S.2587) versus a statewide mandate. Take action now to let Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state Department of State know that you oppose this mandate on homeowners.
Please join the REALTOR Party Call for Action by telling your U.S. Representative to support H.R. 9, the Innovation Act, to stop patent trolls and protect the real estate industry from frivolous lawsuits. REALTORS across the country receive threatening demand letters and lawsuits alleging patent infringement based on the use of common business tools such as drop down menus or search alert functions on websites and the scanner function on a copier. H.R. 9 will help combat this problem and is necessary to protect REALTORS. For more information and to sign the petition, click here and tell Congress to pass this common-sense comprehensive patent litigation reform.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) said it won’t require affordable housing in future authority land development deals, but did adopt a "statement of purpose" that notes a lack of affordable housing and requires that developers honor local affordable housing laws. Recently, the MTA increased efforts to sell or lease its land for residential development. It announced development deals at the Harrison Metro-North station and in Long Island City in Queens. Neither project initially included any affordable housing. However, the Harrison project will now include affordable units. Read the LoHud.com coverage here.
