Hundreds of REALTORS are in Albany this morning on REALTOR Lobby Day to support the NY First Home proposal and other key real estate issues on behalf of the industry and homeowners. Last week, NYSAR launched a public campaign in support of the proposal to make buying a first home more affordable in New York State. The program would allow individuals to save up to $5,000 ($10,000 for couples) per year in a designated savings account to be used solely for costs associated with the purchase of a first home. NYSAR will be calling on members and the public to take action by asking their legislators to pass this proposal into law. Learn more at NYFirstHome.com.

Legislation passed both houses earlier this month requiring applicants for real estate licenses and license renewals to complete continuing education coursework on the law of agency. Specifically, this bill would require two hours of agency-related coursework in the licensee’s initial two-year licensing term as part of the 22.5 hours of continuing education. In each subsequent two-year cycle, licensees would be required to take at least one hour of agency-related continuing education. In order for this bill to become law, it will need to be considered and signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. NYSAR’s memo in support can be found here.
As part of the state budget deal on April 1, new homeowners – or people who move – will receive a check for a portion of their school-property taxes instead of receiving it as an upfront savings on their tax bill. In order to receive the check in September of this year if you’re a new homeowner, you must register for STAR through the state Department of Taxation and Finance.
