Message from the Board

Happy holidays everyone! I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your membership! Your contributions enrich our community.

This year we were pleased to upgrade education programs on subjects important to you and to introduce exciting new learning opportunities and hot topics, such as making the ASK, targeting members from entry level to CEO. We also continued to offer the relevant ExecConnect and Executive Women in Nonprofits engagement groups. Our annual MeetNY, honoring NYSAE’s 100th anniversary boasted a sold-out crowd.

NYSAE’s Education Committee, co-chaired by Catherine Brennan MBA, CAE and Anat Kendal CPA, PFS will produce an educational workshop, Associations 101, for onboarding new hires and training emerging leaders and young professionals on the overall model and operations of member-based associations. Long time NYSAE members Linda Ferm and Mary Jane Eimer have volunteered to help produce the program. The 3-part, ½-day program, is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7th at NYSAE headquarters.
NYSAE is thrilled to introduce our newest co-chairs for the Next Generation Committee: Ashley Turrell, Membership and Analytics Director of the Manufacturers’ Association of Plastic Processers, and Johnna Buckley, CMP, Senior Account Executive with Marriott International. Ashley and Johnna will soon be familiar faces and social organizers for NYSAE, putting together programming and events geared towards education and networking for young professionals in the Association Community. Before Ashley and Johnna can get started, they need your help.

Moderating the first in a series of NYSAE webinars earlier this month was an education for me, but not only about its immediate subject, the SHIELD Act – NY State’s new set of data security/privacy regulations.

Governor Cuomo signed the SHIELD (Stop Hacks and Improve Electronic Data Security) into law on July 26, 2019; it goes into effect on March 21, 2020. On December 11, I had the pleasure and honor of moderating a panel with two highly-informed experts, Dr. Robert Spangler, Associate Executive Director, Operations and Information Technology at NJ State Bar Association who also happens to be my co-chair on the NYSAE Technology Committee and Rebecca Rakoski, co-founder and managing partner at X-P-A-N Law Group. In words I borrow from Dr. Spangler, he is a “privacy expert technically speaking” and Ms. Rakoski is a “privacy expert legally speaking.” Together, they certainly had the bases covered on this extremely timely topic.

Ask the Expert

A recent call came into NYSAE Headquarters. The question was:

We have a long time Board member who is unwilling to take on a leadership role. This Board member shows up at meetings, which is helpful, but that’s it. Plus, there’re other volunteers who want to serve on the Board and chair a committee. This is a sticky situation. What can I do?

Far too often, women grapple with the decision of "Should I Stay?" or "Should I Go?" compounded with the impression that the grass is greener if you quit to do your own thing or job hop. Joan’s goal is to help leaders build the courage and endurance to stay and lead the necessary transformation within their organization so they and their teams can achieve their personal and professional goals. Joan will share relevant tools and research-based strategies to lead positive change for personally and their colleagues. This session will increase our awareness about culture dynamics in the workplace influenced by gender stereotypes, corporate politics and modern challenges of achievement in an effort to shift mindset to become a positive catalyst for collaboration and inclusion – this is the core concept behind Joan’s book Dig Your Heels In. Joan will offer strategies to develop career endurance, professional courage, embody confidence and prioritize self-care. Participants will learn about two key ‘Career Derailers’: Good Girl Thinking and Imposter Syndrome, which lead to self-sabotage and limit our effectiveness and impact. We will experiment with physical, mental, and vocal-based strategies and participants will increase their awareness about personal pain points to embrace new habits and commit to achievable goals. Do you work for (or with) a trade association, professional society, individual membership organization, philanthropic organization, tribal organization or association management company? You should make attaining the CAE credential your goal if you have: five years of experience as an employee at the staff level at a qualifying organization, one year employed as a chief staff executive or c-suite-level executive at a qualifying organization, ten years of part-time service to qualifying organizations as a consultant, or five years of full-time service to qualifying organizations as a consultant

But, achieving this certification requires an investment of both time and money. Don't know where to begin? The CAE Kickoff is your first step as ASAE and NYSAE support you on your CAE journey. The CAE exam covers a broad base of association management knowledge, so there's a lot of information to review, compile, and organize. The Kickoff will help you assess your knowledge of the content, sort out what is and is not covered on the exam, identify content areas you need to focus on, and even rediscover the joys of test-taking.
Get a solid overview of the nine domains of association management covered in the exam, learn how to approach the exam with the mindset of a chief staff executive, take a practice exam to evaluate your progress and areas that need more attention, and forge long-term relationships with other association professionals and create study groups to help you prepare for the exam.

Bonus! A copy of the CAE Study Guide ($82 value) is included in the price of the registration.

Fee: $1,095 ASAE Members | $1,465 Nonmembers (Discount for the first 5 NYSAE members who register)
