Message from the Board

Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! Yes, it’s happy. Despite the recent tragic attack on our nation’s capital, I am confident we entered a new year with hope and optimism. Personally, I am more positive than ever as I watch members of my family securing appointments to take the COVID vaccine. I’m excited knowing that one day soon we’ll be back together in person again.

Q. I’m just not sure how to advise my Board at this point. We have a local event over the summer here in New York City. I’m trying to remain optimistic that it will go live, but I’m watching the COVID numbers rise and the reports that plenty of people are choosing not to take the vaccine. As of now the city has not lifted its guidelines on events but 5 months from now it could be different. I just don’t want to wait until last minute to make this program virtual. Any ideas?
News for New York Associations
ANA is currently leading the fight against multiple proposed state ad taxes. In New York State. S. 302 and it’s Assembly companion A. 734 have been introduced.  If passed, they would result in New York becoming the first state to impose a sales tax on “advertisement services on a digital interface, including advertisements in the form of banner advertising, search engine advertising, interstitial advertising, and other comparable advertising services which markets or promotes a particular good, service, or political candidate or message.” Additionally, Sen. Gianaris has reintroduced the DATA Act (S. 1124) for this legislative session, which also would impose taxes on data.
KKD Tourism Advisors, a DMV-area consultancy comprised of DMO veteran execs is breaking ground in the areas of tourism recovery and destination development. Karin Aaron, Kris Smith, and David Jackson whose combined experience in the destination marketing industry exceeds 100 years, believe that this will be the dual focus of the tourism industry post-pandemic.
In an effort to support the local restaurant industry, NYC & Company announced a special winter iteration of their signature NYC Restaurant Week® program, NYC Restaurant Week To Go, relevant for takeout and delivery during this time when indoor dining is halted. Eateries across the five boroughs are participating in this weeklong program that will take place January 25–31, with an optional extension February 1–7. Restaurants were encouraged to submit from fine dining to casual—a value-oriented lunch and/or dinner entrée with at least one side for the price of $20.21 to commemorate the new year. NYC & Company askes that you share this widely with colleagues in the industry as their goal is to support as many eateries as possible.

ASAE Corner
ASAE has asked the Administration for swift guidance implementing the year-end COVID-19 stimulus law that will enable as many deserving 501(c)(6) organizations as possible to access relief programs such as the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). In a Dec. 22 letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and SBA Administrator Jovita Carranza, ASAE President and CEO Susan Robertson said the year-end bill will provide long-awaited relief for many 501(c)(6) associations.
ASAE strongly condemns the violent, unlawful revolt against civil authority and America’s democratic process that took place yesterday at the U.S. Capitol. While peaceful protest is a hallmark of our republic, the breach by rioters of the Capitol building and disruption of a Constitutionally mandated duty of Congress to certify the outcome of the 2020 presidential election resulted in death, endangered many more lives and was an assault on our democracy.

As the vaccine rollout continues in the US organizations are making the pre-emptive decision to take their conferences virtual. To help facilitate that decision NYSAE is partnering with up to five technology partners for a technology showcase. The showcase will provide each partner with 15 minutes to demonstrate how their platform delivers the best user experience, what opportunities they can create for organizations, and answer questions from the audience. If you're starting to take your conference virtual this is an event you won't want to miss.

It’s a new year with renewed energy and optimism. Although the first quarter of 2021 may not look too different than the last quarter of 2020, association leaders everywhere are doing their best to complete their full calendar of programs and carry out their strategic objectives. What does that mean? Do we have approval to book live conferences? Are we planning to reopen our offices? Are we building back our bench? Join us in the NYSAE Engagement Lounge where we will all be asked to share our predictions for 2021.
