Halloween has come and gone for another year, and this signifies a couple of things: the first, thankfully, is No More Pumpkin Spice Anything, and the second is some much cooler weather settling in. One of these things I’m delighted about, the other one, not quite so much.
The past two weeks have been busy ones for us at the League of Champions as we continue visiting sites with our members before it gets too cold, as well as assisting the OGCA team plan for the upcoming Safety Awards. This will be my first time attending the Safety Awards event, and I’m very excited to have the opportunity to continue meeting LOC members, and more importantly, to celebrate our industry’s combined successes in Safety over the past year.
I normally take a few sentences to introduce our newest Champions and welcome them to the League, however this week is very different for me. It gives me great pleasure to say Maawanju’idiwag. Although I am nowhere near being able to pronounce this, what I can tell you is that this captivating word means Come Together.
With great pride, I would like to welcome our newest Champions, Makwa-Cahill LP. Makwa Development Corporation and The Cahill Group have joined forces to create Makwa-Cahill, an indigenous construction and fabrication company in Ontario and also the first to possess the stringent qualifications to support the energy and nuclear sectors.
Makwa Development Corporation is an indigenous owned company located on the Neyaashiinigmiing Unceeded First Nation within the Saugeen Ojibway Nation (SON) which is fully owned and operated by two Neyaashiinigmiing band members. Makwa has developed unique capabilities in the areas of Construction, Fabrication, Staff Augmentation, Warehousing, Environmental, Vegetation control, Transportation, Waste Management and Real Estate. Makwa has the capability to access skills, labour and expertise through established First Nation partnerships and labour/training programs throughout Canada. The Cahill Group is one of the largest multi-disciplinary construction and fabrication companies in Canada with operations from Eastern Newfoundland to Northern Alberta. Cahill has three divisions: construction, fabrication and technical, and serve the Oil & Gas, Mining, Power Generation, Institutional, and Water Treatment markets.
Makwa-Cahill has been created to provide their clients and partners with a socially balanced, local, qualified, and technically superior fabrication, construction and maintenance solution, all made in Ontario. Together, they are striving to build meaningful capacity within the SON Traditional Territory, and beyond. Alongside their strategic business partners, Makwa-Cahill will create real and meaningful opportunities for SON and First Nations band members and drive local economic benefit for all in every community they serve.
We welcome you to the League!
