An unintended consequence of the global pandemic has been the extreme volatility with which the construction supply chain has had to contend. The lack of certain products in the industry, or the spike in the cost of items that were otherwise commonplace on construction projects, has made accurately pricing a project akin to the nexus of quantum physics and black magic!
This is the last phase of discussions to replace the Ontario College of Trades and its mandate to recognize trades and the training requirements. OGCA is working with the industry coalition, the Ontario Skilled Trades Alliance, to respond to the discussion paper and make recommendations to support trades training and skills development.
The Legislature has passed Bill 238 The Workplace and Insurance Amendment Act. The focus of the Act is to correct the anomaly of a 7.8% jump in the WSIB’s maximum assessment ceiling by holding the increase to 2%. As a result, the WSIB has adjusted the assessment ceiling down to $97,308. effective Jan. 1, 2021.

OGCA is working with the Ministry of Health to make antigen or rapid test available to more contractors. EllisDon and other contractors have become leaders in rapid testing, which identifies COVID-19 community spread before it spreads on site. It is a proven strategy to protect your workers at a time that community spread to workplaces is a growing problem.

One of the things that often comes up when discussing the future of construction is sustainability. The building sector is one of the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), with occupied buildings being responsible for nearly 40% of global GHG emissions, according to Architecture2030.
We at the LOC are gearing up for a couple of very busy weeks, starting with the National Day of Mourning on April 28. We will be observing the virtual ceremony hosted by WSIB (WSIB Day of Mourning) beginning at 10:45 a.m. followed by a Moment of Silence at 11 a.m.
Safety Week is moving forward virtually from May 3 – 7, 2021. Our Champions have adjusted their Safety Week activities to accommodate the current restrictions on in-person events. We ask that you send us photos of your virtual or physically distanced Safety Week activities, and we will be happy to share your stories. Please send your photos and captions to Judith. Both the Region of Peel and City of Toronto have introduced a class order to mandate workplace closure to control the spread of COVID-19. The class orders take effect Friday, April 23, 2021. The Peel class order is publicly available and updates an earlier class order related to COVID-19 and the workplace. The City of Toronto class order is not yet available but is expected to contain substantially similar requirements related to workplace closure.
