After much anticipation and planning, the OGCA was able to host our in-person Annual Safety Awards breakfast on Friday, November 19, 2021. This awards presentation was incredibly important to the OGCA since it highlights all of the efforts that our members strive for each day, on every ICI construction site, to ensure that health and safety is always, first and foremost, top of mind.

It started with toilet paper. Then it was lumber. Now, more than a year and a half into the COVID-19 pandemic, high demand, limited manufacturing capacity and supply chain woes continue to roil every sector of the economy, including residential and commercial construction.

“The industry is experiencing a number of issues with a lot of steel products, especially pre-engineered structural steel components,” says Giovanni Cautillo, president of the Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA). By email, he shared a recent example from one of his members.

On October 25, the Government of Ontario Released Bill 27: Working for Workers Act, 2021.

The proposed legislation contains eight substantive legal changes to various Ontario employment law statutes, including:

  • substantial WSIB premium rate reductions, including dropping the Non-residential general contractors class rate to $1.79
  • the distribution of WSIB funds over a certain funding level
  • a 'disconnect from work' policy
  • removing barriers for internationally trained professionals
  • a requirement for recruiters and temporary help agencies to have licences to operate

Together with the CEC, the OGCA supports the proposed policy changes to the WSIB and will work with the government to implement policy that supports full funding of the WSIB while distributing excess funds to construction employers. Continued analysis on Bill 27 will be provided as the associated regulations are introduced.

Association Partner Norm Keith of KPMG Law LLP has provided the attached summary for OGCA members with an analysis of Bill 27 for employers. Please read the summary for more information.

AECO Innovation Lab has launched the Canadian Construction Technology Survey 2021 in collaboration with buildingSMART Canada and researchers from L'École de technologie supérieure Montréal, University of British Columbia, and University of Waterloo. The survey features 48 questions that investigate the use of BIM and Technology, commonly held beliefs, benefits and barriers of technology, application and need of standards and resources, and the future of technology in our industry.

The Canadian architecture, engineering, construction, owners, operators and other stakeholders within this industry are generalized as lagging behind its international counterparts when it comes to the adoption of new technologies and processes. Understanding the uptake and beliefs surrounding these technologies is critical for their adoption in Canada. The survey aims to capture the state of BIM and other transformative technologies within the Canadian industry and provide a benchmark for their implementation in Canada.

Taking part in the survey will allow for a greater understanding of where the industry is today to help shape the future of the Canadian construction industry.  Let your voice be heard and be eligible for a draw for an Oculus headset and other prizes offered by our partners!

Last week, the Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA) hosted "Building a BIM Team: How to Harness the Power of Collaborative Technology.” The webinar, sponsored by Procore Technologies, is the first from the OGCA oriented toward construction design and collaboration. It began by laying a foundation and explaining core concepts, then made a case for BIM by outlining the benefits of collaboration in the construction industry, and finally presented the critical attributes of construction stakeholders when implementing BIM across a project.

LOC staff had the pleasure of participating in the OGCA Safety Awards last week. Thank you to all of our Champions who were able to attend our first in-person event in nearly two years. As Giovanni Cautillo expressed earlier in his President’s report, there was a very noticeable feeling of gratitude. I would also like to add how empowering it is to be in a room of Industry Leaders, all celebrating our combined successes in safety. For me, it never ceases to be a source of encouragement listening to LOC and Safety Committee Chair Craig Lesurf, reminding us that together, we are making a difference, and that we are all responsible for safety, both on and off the job site. Thank you, Craig for continuing to lead by example! We look forward to seeing everyone at the next event.

As we are quickly approaching the end of 2021, we at the League have some great things on which to look back. As our industry continues to navigate through the ups-and-downs of COVID and our ‘new normal,’ 2021 has been one of growth for the League of Champions: our incorporation as a not-for-profit, a new board of directors, and incredible growth in membership. We want to thank each and every one of you for your continued support of our activities. Without you, none of what we do would be possible.

Are you a Safety Champion? Do you know a Safety Champion? Do you know a company who would be a great addition to the LOC? Have you considered joining the League of Champions? If you have any questions or want to learn more about the League of Champions, just let us know, we are here to help.
