The Ontario General Contractor’s Association (OGCA) is looking to clarify the definition and language surrounding interference drawings that are requested on certain projects.
The OGCA recently put a bulletin out stating a number of members have had issues with interference drawing requests by the buyers of construction, architects and consultants. Labour market challenges could continue across Ontario’s construction industry into the near future, as ongoing activity in both the residential and non-residential sectors builds employment to a peak in 2028 and adds pressure to already-tight recruiting conditions.

The CCA is pleased to report that we achieved headway with the federal government on our cornerstone issue to rebuild Canada’s workforce through immigration reform. The Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship recently announced a new process under the Express Entry program to welcome skilled newcomers with work experience in occupations considered a priority in Canada.

Recent reports of misconduct by Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) inspectors in Ontario has garnered national attention. News sources as diverse as the Toronto Star, trade media and the Toronto Sun have covered reports of the investigation and termination of anywhere from 22 to 50 OHS inspectors in Ontario for just cause.

Increasingly, requests for accommodation in the workplace focus on mental, not physical, disability. Yet, understanding when a mental health issue may be a disability and how far the duty to accommodate a mental disability extends can be challenging for an employer.
Effective January 1, 2024, a temporary help agency (“THA”) or recruiter operating in Ontario must
have a licence, or have submitted a license application, to operate. Similarly, a client of a THA or any employer or prospective employee cannot knowingly use an unlicensed THA or recruiter. Failure to comply will be a violation of the Ontario Employment Standards Act, 2000 (“ESA”).
