Third Parties Continue to Plague Industry

Members know that OGCA has actively been opposing the use of Third Party Qualification firms, particularly in Safety, where we published a Guide to help members oppose this useless process. A recent tender for King City (York Region) again shows how little respect owners are showing for the safety of workers.

The use of these firms is a throwback to the infamous "Binder" days. Firms were asked to submit their safety "Binders" as part of their Tender. The use of these firms is no different. There is no confirmation that the policies or "Binders" are actually being implemented.

OAA study reveals inefficiencies in project planning

The design and construction industry in Ontario is a major player in the health of the provincial economy, providing employment to more than half a million Ontarians and generating more than six per cent of the province’s GDP.

It is carried out by a range of players from large national organizations who have international reach, to a multitude of smaller participants who work only in their local environments. For various reasons beyond our control, the industry is also attracting offshore international organizations given Ontario's strong construction economy.

Call for Entries for Ontario Concrete Awards

8 Carbon Monoxide Safety Tips

Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odorless, tasteless and colourless gas that can be a serious workplace hazard. In fact, hundreds of Canadian workers experience CO poisoning each year, which can lead to hospitalization or, in some cases, death.

CO gas is produced as a result of the incomplete burning of carbon. As such, common sources of CO in the workplace include, but are not limited to, internal combustion engines, kilns, furnaces, welding, forging, space heaters and fires.
