Looking Ahead to 2023

Most general contractors that I have spoken with have a rather “bearish” outlook for 2023, and possibly beyond. Some of our contractors are currently witnessing a steady reduction in the number of tenders being issued, both publicly and privately. This is a definite “red flag” for ICI construction and should not be ignored.

When the buyers of construction start to restrict or diminish the output of projects, this translates directly into a diminishment in the confidence of said buyers. This loss of confidence is not unfounded and can be highlighted with what the entire construction industry is experiencing.

Effective December 1, 2022, the Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA) will apply a 2.4% convenience fee to a transaction when a payment is made by credit card.

Concrete Floor Contractors Association Study – 2014 Concrete Materials Lab Test Study

The Canadian Standard CSA A23.1-2019 “Concrete materials & methods of concrete construction” requires a minimum concrete materials temperature of 10°C for the duration of the curing period (for either three or seven days). Note that cold temperature substrates can also reduce the temperature of the concrete materials below 10°C.

Canadian Construction Association Survey

The Canadian Construction Documents Committee (CCDC) is currently updating the CCDC 30 Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) standard form contract document.

Government of Canada Releases 2022 Fall Economic Statement

OCS - ICI Permit Values Dropped Roughly 50% in September.

According to the Ontario Construction Secretariat, building permit values decreased in all sectors from August to September, with total ICI permit value down 51.8%. Year-to-Date permit values, however, were still higher compared to this time last year.

Investment (August 2022); Monthly Investment in Building Construction Remains Relatively Stable (Via Ontario Construction Secretariat)

From July to August 2022, investment in building construction was relatively stable, with changes of less than 2% in each sector. Yearly changes were somewhat higher, with the industrial sector experiencing the largest increase at 24.8%. Year-to-date investment was higher across all sectors, with the largest increase again in the industrial sector.
