Southern College of Optometry (SCO) continues to expand its involvement in interprofessional education through a number of collaborative projects throughout Memphis.
The college recently hosted its third Interprofessional Education Diabetes Clinic, as students and faculty members joined colleagues from other health care institutions in a series of educational events designed to provide each other – and patients – with a collaborative approach to treating diabetes. Nutrition and other forms of care were included with optometry to encourage a collaborative approach to providing care.
Faculty members and students also collaborated this summer with colleagues at the University of Memphis representing speech language pathology, audiology, nursing and public health programs. The event included team-building exercises and case simulations to discuss the different aspects of patient care required in the IPE approach.
