ASCO held its eighth biennial Summer Institute for Faculty Development (SIFD) on July 14-17 in Fort Worth, Texas. This year’s program was chaired by Dr. Tiffenie Harris, Director of Clinical Education and Associate Professor of the Western University College of Optometry.
Commenting on the value of the biennial event, Dr. Harris said, “SIFD again this year has been an amazing opportunity for faculty to network with their peers as well as mentors from various institutions. ASCO provides this invaluable service along with industry support for the development of optometric faculty in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service. This year's SIFD was very productive and well received by all.”
The incoming co-chair, Dr. Daniel Roberts, said, “As usual, this year’s program was a big success. I think this event continues to provide an invaluable opportunity for newer optometric faculty to learn from experienced mentors and to develop ideas and strategies that they can apply toward success throughout their academic careers. We had another great group of people attend this year’s event along with a lot of great discussion and idea sharing to benefit all.”
Dr. Karla Zadnik was honored as the keynote speaker during the program. Dr. Zadnik, Dean at The Ohio State University College of Optometry, has been involved with the 2006, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2017, and 2019 Institutes, serving as a mentor and speaker.
Fifty-three faculty members from 23 schools and colleges of optometry and two Canadian institutions attended. Ninety-six percent of the participants reported that the program met or exceeded their expectations.
“I truly didn't know what to expect, but I came back very motivated and really just charged to ‘lean in.’ The choice of speakers, topics, and overall vibe gave me such a sense of support and community. I will most definitely recommend others at ICO to apply.” –Dr. Sanghera, ICO
"The SIFD was an enriching experience for myself and I feel it is the best source of development for any young faculty wishing to excel in their respective areas of interest in academia. The lectures held were given by speakers perfectly fit to share their guidance and pearls of wisdom of the topics at hand. Lectures are grouped by day in similar topics, allowing attendees to effectively compartmentalize and focus on their specific goals each day in the categories of Teaching, Service and Scholarly Activity. Additional useful topics discussed were promotion and student assessment. On top of that, mentors are assigned to each attendee to allow individual discussion on areas of development and answer any questions, which I found to be incredibly helpful. Overall I had an invaluable experience, the lectures were highly motivating and provided me with the tools I need to excel in my career for years to come!" –Dr. Meagher, PCO/Salus
The goal of the SIFD is to provide participants with an opportunity to gain the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance their success in an optometric academic environment as lifelong, productive faculty, thus contributing to increased retention of faculty in the schools and colleges of optometry. The program promotes active learning in a nurturing environment and is comprised of formal presentations, workshops and shared activities in the areas of teaching and learning, scholarship and research, and academic culture. Each attendee worked with mentors to develop a long-term career plan with specific goals, objectives and action strategies.
ASCO thanks Alcon, Allergan, Essilor, and the National Board of Examiners in Optometry for generously sponsoring the SIFD. Representatives from Alcon (Tom Duchardt), Allergan (Mark Risher), and Essilor (Ryan Parker) attended the Institute this year.
