The University of Houston, College of Optometry (UHCO) has added a state-of-the-art Mamava nursing pod to its University Eye Institute (UEI) clinical facility. The first of its kind among universities in Texas, this modern nursing suite offers mothers on the go with a comfortable and private location to feed children or pump breast milk.
UHCO Dean Michael Twa, OD, PhD made it a priority to install this lactation and nursing space because faculty and staff did not have a good way to address this need.
“The majority of optometrists entering training today are women, and it is important to recognize the practical realities and needs of our students, as well as our patients, faculty and staff,” Dean Twa said. “Modern life can be busy and stressful, especially for new moms. This kind of support is just one way to show that we care for the members of our community.”
To access the Mamava pod, users must first download the Mamava app. From there, they will be provided with instructions for getting started. Within the UEI, the Mamava is located near the pediatric clinical service, just down the hall from the patient registration counter.
The UEI Mamava comes complete with two spacious benches, a fold-down table and power outlets.
