Set Your Swatch: CPT Changes Are Coming
Brett Paepke, OD, RevolutionEHR Director of ECP Services
What do these three events have in common?
- Sally Ride became the first American woman in space
- The first Swatch collection was introduced
- McDonald’s unveiled the McNugget
Need a hint? What if we added “CMS adopted Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and mandated that the codes be used to report Part B Medicare services” to the list? That’s right: they all happened in 1983! That’s a full two years before Dr. Emmett Brown made a time machine out of a DeLorean and sent Marty McFly back to the future. (By the way, if that reference makes you scratch your head please don't let me know. I feel old enough without the additional burden).
Each year since introduction, the CPT code set has gone through updates where stakeholders plead their cases for the addition, modification or removal of certain codes. The American Medical Association recently released the official CPT updates for 2020 and there are a few that we, as eye care providers, should be aware of to be properly paid for services delivered starting January 1, 2020.
