ASCO Talk, Listen, Care, Heal (TLCH) Town Hall Series Discussion on The Psychological Care of our Students
ASCO will host a moderated panel discussion about its member’s role in the psychological well-being of optometry students. Topics include stereotype threat, personal awareness when teaching and interacting with students from underrepresented backgrounds, managing microaggressions, and recommendations on navigating mental well-being.
The event will be held Thursday, September 23, from 8-9:30 p.m. eastern time for faculty and residents. Speakers include Drs. Courtney Boddie and Denise Hayes.
Dr. Denise Hayes, Assistant Vice Provost of Student Affairs at Indiana University, is a licensed psychologist who possesses nearly 30 years of experience in university mental health. During her tenure in higher education, this Indiana native served as the director of student health and counseling services for DePauw University and The Claremont Colleges.
Dr. Courtney is the clinical director at The Counseling Hub, LLC. In addition to his work as a healthcare administrator and mental health provider, he remains active in the classroom, teaching undergraduate students in psychology and graduate students in social work and professional counseling. Dr. Courtney is the former associate dean of students for diversity and inclusion and director of counseling services at Southern Illinois University - Edwardsville. He has extensive experience and academic expertise in the areas of multicultural and social justice counseling, with emphasis on the roles of minority stress and cultural trauma in psychological well-being.
