Innovative Use of Contact Lenses
Beyond Vision Correction
Lyndon Jones, PhD, FCOptom, FAAO
Director, Centre for Ocular Research & Education
Professor, School of Optometry & Vision Science, University of Waterloo
Contact lenses were invented to correct refractive error, and they have become a successful, convenient, and widely used commodity for this purpose. However, looking forward, the potential applications for these devices are proliferating and vision correction "per se" is often not the main intention. Industries such as bio-sensing, pharmaceutical, defense and the entertainment sector will apply contact lens-based technologies to achieve dramatic solutions to problems within their own areas.
In this review, we will take a look at some of these innovations and consider how these efforts will impact the contact lens practice of tomorrow. The technologies covered will include such diverse areas as myopia control, ocular drug delivery, disease diagnosis and management, and sophisticated imaging and augmented reality opportunities.
Learning objectives for this session include:
- Reviewing and understanding the current technology.
- Understanding the design of smart contact lenses.
- Understanding the benefits and uses of screening for systemic diseases.
- Understanding the benefits and uses in screening and treating ocular diseases.
- Understanding the use and availability of augmented reality contact lenses.
