Arizona College of Optometry Students Expand Scope of Practice Through Collaborative Care Club

Midwestern University (MWU) upholds the One Health initiative throughout all of its eight colleges, including the Arizona College of Optometry (AZCOPT). This core principle of MWU’s healthcare philosophy recognizes that the health of humans is connected to the health of animals and the environment. One of the many ways AZCOPT students broaden their scope of practice is through working with MWU’s Collaborative Care Club. Through this club, students from multiple disciplines, including optometry, speech-language pathology, clinical psychology, physical therapy, and occupational therapy work together to provide the best, most comprehensive care to patients.

On December 12, 2022, AZCOPT students joined other students from the Collaborative Care Club to host a “speed dating” healthcare career education event. Students from many different programs got an in-depth look at how healthcare professions can work together. With many AZCOPT students in attendance, they handed out information about the optometry program to other students, educating them on what they do, how they care for patients, and how their programs can work together to provide high-quality, interprofessional care to patients.

“It was so much fun to familiarize myself with students of other professions. I know my future patients will be grateful for the connections I make in the Collaborative Care Club,” said Joshua Reese (AZCOPT ’25).
