BrightFocus Foundation Invites Letters of Intent for Macular Degeneration Research

Founded in 1973, the BrightFocus Foundation supports research to end Alzheimer's disease, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.

The foundation invites letters of intent for its Macular Degeneration Research Grants program. Grants will be awarded in three categories: 

1. Postdoctoral Fellowship Program: Grants of up to $200,000 over two years will be awarded to young postdoctoral researchers during their final stages of mentored training. The award provides salary support for a young scientist to conduct postdoctoral studies in an established laboratory focused on research contributing to understanding the biological causes and/or new clinical treatment of macular degeneration and should also serve as the basis for the applicant's independent research career.
2. New Investigator Grant Program: Grants of up to $450,000 over three years will be awarded to investigators during their early years as independent investigators involved in studies that impact the causes and/or treatment of macular degeneration.
3. Innovative Research Grants: Grants of up to $600,000 over up to three years will be awarded to support high-risk/high-gain age-related macular degeneration research. The foundation hopes to attract established investigators to apply for this support, but the aims of the application must contain outside-the-box ideas that are novel in the field.

Letters of intent are due July 31, 2023, at 5 p.m. ET. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal by December 5, 2022, at 5 p.m. ET.
