Following a national search, Maryke N. Neiberg, OD, FAAO, associate professor in the MCPHS School of Optometry, was appointed dean of the School of Optometry, effective July 1, 2019.
Dr. Neiberg has held academic appointments for approximately 15 years, with her most recent role as the externship director. As externship director, she was responsible for the clinical education and site selection for fourth-year students in the Doctor of Optometry program. Previously, she held administrative roles as associate dean of academic affairs at Midwestern University College of Optometry in Chicago, Illinois, and as coordinator of clerkships at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California.
Dr. Neiberg is the recipient of several teaching awards, including the MCPHS School of Optometry Didactic Faculty of the Year Award from the Class of 2020, the California Optometric Association Excellence in Optometric Education Award (2012), Preceptor of the Year (2009) and the Most Inspirational Teacher of the Year (2008).
Dr. Neiberg’s scholarship focuses on neuro-eye disease and systemic disease affecting the eye. She has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles and posters and has given presentations at national and international events. She has authored several book chapters and serves on the American Academy of Optometry Admittance Committee. Dr. Neiberg is a residency-trained, board-certified optometrist and a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry. She is currently credentialed at the Glaucoma Clinic at the MCPHS Dr. Lesley and Dr. Mary Ann Walls Eye and Vision Center.
