Associate Dean and Professor, Dr. Josephine Shallo-Hoffmann, Retires from NSUCO
Dr. Josephine Shallo-Hoffmann, PhD, FAAO has announced her retirement from Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry (NSUCO). She joined the faculty in 1999 and has been a strong contributor as a teacher, researcher, and mentor. She previously served as Department Chair for Research and has been the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs for nearly 10 years. Dr. Shallo-Hoffmann also led the HPD PhD Core that fosters the collaboration of faculty across disciplines to teach doctoral students. Many students and faculty have benefitted from her wisdom, guidance, and passionate support of our program.
Dr. Shallo-Hoffmann studied psychology at Columbia University in New York, and Rutgers University in New Jersey and was awarded a PhD from the Institute of Cognitive Studies in the area of visual perception under the guidance of Professor Irvin Rock. After graduation, Dr. Shallo-Hoffmann pursued clinical research in the areas of normal and abnormal eye-movements, associated adaptive processes and vestibular function. She held appointments at the University of Goettingen in Germany and the Medical Research Council of Great Britain at the National Hospital for Neurology, Queen Square, London before her present position.
Dr. Shallo-Hoffmann will be succeeded by Dr. Cristina Llerena Law. Dr. Llerena Law is a graduate of NSUCO, completed a residency in pediatric optometry at State University of New York (SUNY), and attained her PhD in vision science from the Graduate Center for Vision Research at SUNY. She joined the faculty at NSUCO in 2015 and has served as Department Chair for Optometric Clinical Sciences. Dr. Law has been working closely with Dr. Shallo-Hoffmann since the beginning of the pandemic and has played an integral role in coordinating the virtual delivery of Nova’s curriculum and the multifaceted lab schedules. Her knowledge of and involvement with our faculty and students will provide for a seamless transition.
