2021 Dr. Marvin R. Poston Leadership Awards Winners Announced

VSP Global is proud to announce the recipients of the Dr. Marvin R. Poston Leadership Award in collaboration with the National Optometric Association. The award is named in celebration of Dr. Poston, an icon in the field of optometry and the only Black American, co-founding member of VSP. The scholarship is given to a first, second, third, and, fourth-year optometry student, and one member of the National Optometric Student Association (NOSA) Executive Board. Student winners must be in an active leadership role with the NOSA, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and have committed to a career in leadership and service to the profession of private-practice optometry.    

This year, five optometry students were awarded $4,000 scholarships: 

• OD-1: Melisa Philogene, Illinois College of Optometry, Class of 2024 
• OD-2: Sophia Johnson, State University of New York College of Optometry, Class of 2023 
• OD-3: Claudia Amaniampong, University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science, Class of 2022 
• OD-4: Raymond Farmer, State University of New York College of Optometry, Class of 2021 
• Executive Board: Walter Jackson, University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry, Class of 2021
