MacuHealth Takes on An Ambitious Project for AMD Awareness Month
It’s essential for all optometrists to possess an understanding of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Over 11 million people suffer from some form of the progressive disease, with those over the age of 55 especially at risk. According to the National Eye Institute, that number is likely to double by 2050. With these staggering statistics, everyone from family members to caregivers is affected by AMD in some way.
Even Frederic Jouhet, the founder and CEO of MacuHealth, has a personal connection to the retinal disease. After witnessing his mother's sight deteriorate due to AMD, he founded one of the world’s leading eye supplement companies in 2006 with the mission of creating safe, effective and groundbreaking eye care supplements.
With February being AMD Awareness Month, many people want to share a personal story to help educate students about the disease and empathize with those afflicted by it. Jouhet's tale inspired the supplement company's marketing team to take on an expansive storytelling project. They're asking customers, caregivers, eye care professionals and others personally affected by AMD to share their experiences about what it was like to be diagnosed with the disease, their concerns about it and how they've learned to adjust their daily lives around its symptoms.
"There are over 40 peer-reviewed studies that back up the effectiveness of MacuHealth, but at the end of the day, what really matters is if our products enrich someone's quality of life," says Jouhet. "We have a responsibility to help, educate and uplift those suffering from AMD, even if they don't take MacuHealth."
Assembling a community of patients that edifies each other, builds awareness around AMD and gives everyone the knowledge needed to help, including optometry students, is the goal of this ambitious project.
