The Social Determinants of Health and Healthcare Disparities: An Optometric Perspective
Join us on Tuesday, June 28, 2022, from 1 - 2:30 p.m. ET for ASCO’s Diversity and Cultural Competency Committee’s Town Hall on The Social Determinants of Health and Healthcare Disparities: An Optometric Perspective. This interactive program will begin with an overview of the social determinants of health, and the healthcare disparities that play a role in both the access to and the quality of eye care for various patient populations. The subsequent discussion will focus on how this applies to optometric care and how providers can utilize this information to benefit their patients.
This session will be moderated by Michael J. McGovern, OD, FAAO. Speakers include Maya Clark-Cutaia, PhD; Richard M. Soden, OD, FAAO; and Dawn Rigney, MPH.
Dr. Clark-Cutaia is Assistant Professor of Nursing at NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing and Grossman School of Medicine. She received a BS in Nursing (2003), and MS in Nursing (2006) from the University of Pennsylvania, and her PhD in Nursing (2012) from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Clark-Cutaia’s predoctoral training was initially supported by a T32 predoctoral fellowship (T32NR00885705) and then by an individual NRSA F31 predoctoral fellowship (1F31NR014310) entitled for her research on dietary modification management in end stage renal disease sufferers on hemodialysis. Immediately after completing her PhD, she returned to the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing for a T32 postdoctoral fellowship (T32NR007100). This fellowship culminating in Dr. Clark-Cutaia’s receipt of a K23 Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award Recipient (1K23NR015058) from the National Institute of Nursing Research. Dr. Clark-Cutaia’s scholarship focuses on disparities in chronic illness. Dr. Clark-Cutaia’s long-term goal is to impact quality of life by improving health equity. Dr. Clark-Cutaia continues to practice as an adult acute nurse practitioner in the fields of Colorectal Surgery, General Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Urgent Care (via telemedicine), and Urology.
Dr. Richard Soden is a clinical professor and currently the Director of Health Care Development at SUNY College of Optometry. Previously, he served as Vice President for Clinical Affairs at SUNY Optometry for 10 years. Dr. Soden graduated from SUNY college of Optometry in 1979. After graduation, he completed a residency program at the Northport VA Medical Center on Long Island. Dr. Soden remained at Northport VA for 26 years as the Associate Chief of Optometry Service, as well as being a partner in a private group practice. Dr. Soden serves as a third-party consultant for the New York State Optometric Association and has lectured extensively in third-party reimbursement and practice management. He is currently a member of the AOA’s Coding Committee and prior to this, was a member of the Third-Party Committee.
Ms. Dawn Rigney currently serves as the Vice President for Institutional Advancement at SUNY College of Optometry overseeing fundraising, marketing, and communications for the College and the University Eye Center. She is a graduate of New York Medical College where she earned her MPH in 2011. Throughout her more than 20-year career she has focused on raising awareness and resources around access to quality education and healthcare. Ms. Rigney has served on professional panels and advisory committees as well as served as a mentor to others looking to leverage the career for the greater good.
Dr. Michael McGovern is the Chief Medical Officer of the University Eye Center at SUNY College of Optometry. He serves on ASCO's Diversity and Cultural Competency Committee and the Clinical Affairs Committee.
