UAB Vision Science Students Awarded Competitive Ezell Fellowships

The American Academy of Optometry (AAO) Foundation awarded two Vision Science Graduate Program doctoral students at the UAB School of Optometry competitive Ezell fellowships. Sourav Datta received the American Academy of Optometry Centennial Ezell Fellowship. Mahmoud KhalafAllah, MD, MSc, received the Meta Realty Labs Ezell Fellowship, marking his second Ezell win — the maximum possible.

“Receiving this award for the second consecutive year fills me with immense pride and energy,” KhalafAllah said. “It's a profound affirmation that years of dedication and hard work are being recognized. This honor reinvigorates my commitment to advancing research, developing innovative solutions for major blinding conditions, and contributing meaningfully to my community.”

The intricate interactions between myopia and glaucoma are the focus of KhalafAllah research. The aim is to uncover new insights that could lead to groundbreaking advancements in the understanding and treatment of these conditions.

Datta’s research focuses on the issues of accessibility of eye care facilities and visual field testing in patients with glaucoma and mobility impairment. This award will provide the funding and resources needed to advance his research.
