ASCO’s annual Student Award in Clinical Ethics, sponsored by Alcon, is available to optometry students during any point in their professional program at an ASCO-affiliated school or college of optometry in the U.S. and Canada.

For the first time in 16 years, the percentage of full-time female faculty decreased at the U.S. schools and colleges of optometry. Full-time (FT) female faculty comprise 59.9% of total FT faculty, according to ASCO’s 2023-2024 Annual Faculty Data Report, falling from 60.8% last year. The percentage had risen steadily since 2007-2008, when it was 40.8%.

It started off with a toque and ended up with Akirta Sran, OD ‘20, and Brendan Connors, OD ‘20, two Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) at Salus University alumni, getting married backwards and without a ring. And, along the way, four attempted proposals got delayed because of rain, just to add another level of uniqueness to a love story that started at PCO.

The Dry Eye Clinic at UC Berkeley has added the OptiLight Intense Pulsed Laser (IPL) by Lumenis to their arsenal of in-office technologies to treat the signs and symptoms of dry eye. IPL, used commonly in dermatology to treat rosacea and reduce telangiectasia (tiny, new blood vessels), is now being used to treat dry eye disease. Specifically, IPL treats the most common cause of dry eye disease – meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

On top of her busy schedule as a second-year student in the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) at Salus University, Edesthele Decius ‘26OD released a children’s book titled, “Grandma, Can You See?” in early 2024.
