The Kentucky College of Optometry (KYCO) experienced flooding during a recent winter storm.
 
Timothy Gawne, PhD, FAAO, UAB School of Optometry professor, has been awarded an R01 grant to investigate the growing epidemic of myopia (nearsightedness), a condition affecting over 40% of the U.S. adult population and approximately one billion people worldwide. This significant public health issue is linked to abnormal elongation of the eyeball, which raises the risk of developing blinding conditions. 
 
Each year NECO proudly awards the Distinguished Alumni title to deserving graduates who have exemplified excellence, embraced their role as compassionate caregivers, exhibited an unwavering dedication to the field of optometry, and made a profound impact on their communities.
 
Growing up in South Jersey, Emily Vasile, MAT, TVI, MS ‘16, CLVT, VRT '23 was one of those people who needed low vision services and had to cross the river into the greater Philadelphia area to go to the William Feinbloom Vision Rehabilitation Center housed at The Eye Institute for the help they needed.

Nominations are now open for three awards to be presented by the National Academy of Medicine.
 
Latinos en Optometry has collaborated with VSP Vision™ to launch an exciting new blog series called “Cultural Responsiveness.” This initiative seeks to support both existing and prospective practitioners in understanding the importance of healthcare services that are responsive to the social, cultural, and linguistic requirements of patients.
