Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the ASCO Board of Directors and Staff have decided to cancel the in-person meeting in National Harbor, Maryland.
Full-time enrollment in the professional OD programs in the United States grew 1.0% to 7,244 in 2019-20, according to the 2019-20 Annual Student Data Report published in May 2020 by ASCO.

In recognition of her career-long commitment to eye health, mentorship, and advancing the optometric profession, The Ohio State University College of Optometry Alumni Society has named Carol Alexander (OD’87) as the recipient of its 2020 Distinguished Alumna Award.
  
The University of Pikeville honored the academic achievements of more than 270 graduates at the associate, baccalaureate and master’s degree levels in its first-ever virtual commencement on May 2.

State University of New York (SUNY) College of Optometry graduate student Reynolds Ablordeppey, OD, has been named the Danne Ventura–Essilor Ezell Fellow by the American Academy of Optometry Foundation (AAOF).
 
  
Dr. Chantelle Roman, recent graduate of the University of The Incarnate Word, Rosenberg School of Optometry, has been awarded the Alcon 2020 Case Report Award from her 4th Year class.
  
Because of the closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic in mid-March, Residency Match Day was a little different this year.
Sandra Block, OD ’81, MEd, MPH, FAAO, FCOVD plans to retire later this year. Dr. Block is a beloved ICO professor, known for serving our students, the young patients of The Illinois Eye Institute at Princeton Elementary School, and children with special needs.
 
  
Andrew Gurwood, OD ’89, FAAO, Resident ’90, a professor Clinical Sciences at Salus University’s Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) and co-chief of Suite 3 at The Eye Institute has been named the 2020 Albert Fitch Memorial Alumnus of the Year by the University’s Alumni Association.
  
Bhawan Minhas, OD, FAAO, Resident ’13, director of the on-campus Residency Programs and a faculty member of Salus University’s Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO), has received the Distinguished Service Award from the University’s Alumni Association.
Midwestern University recently announced lower interest rates for its private loan program, which will benefit students on their journey of becoming the next generation of healthcare professionals.
