ASCO’s 2022-2023 Annual Student Data Report, released in May 2023, shows an increased percentage of underrepresented minority full-time students as compared to last year. The percentage of Black or African American students increased from 4.0% to 4.3% and the percentage of Hispanic or Latino students increased from 7.8% to 8.7%. Numbers are based on the 23 U.S. optometry schools with enrolled students in fall 2022. Five years ago, the percentage of Black or African American students was 2.7% and the percentage of Hispanic or Latino students was 6.4%.

ASCO announces a theme edition of the journal Optometric Education (https://journal.opted.org) that will be dedicated to global optometric education. ASCO welcomes manuscript submissions that highlight research, curricula, pedagogy, public health initiatives, and other projects that align with the theme edition’s mission of sharing ongoing efforts to advance the profession of optometry worldwide.

Congratulations to second-year optometry student, Jessica Wang, for winning the Student Innovator Award – a $5,000 scholarship that rewards the most creative, innovative, and feasible idea proposed by a student, or a team of up to three students. Jessica’s presentation, “Pectin-Chitosan Bioplastics: A better way to visualize contact lens packaging,” focused on the use of biodegradable materials that are abundantly available and a renewable resource; pectin from citrus peel and chitosan from prawn shells.

At the Midwestern University Eye Institute on the Glendale, AZ, campus, clinical faculty are now offering some of the newest technology in cataract surgery: Light Adjustable Lenses (LAL) implanted at the time of the cataract surgery. This cutting-edge procedure is performed by Robert Fintelmann, MD, FACS, Associate Professor, Arizona College of Optometry.

To promote diversity and equity in the optometric profession for generations to come, the American Optometric Association (AOA) and the American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) have created the AOA/AOSA Opportunities in Optometry Grant program. This fund is designed as a one-time stipend for under-represented minority students interested in the field of optometry to help defray the costs associated with applying to optometry school.
