ASCO experienced a 3% increase in applicants for the 2022-2023 OptomCAS application cycle compared to 2021-2022, making it the second highest number of applicants ever to optometry institutions. The 2015-2016 application cycle experienced the highest number of applicants at 2,812.  
 
Yahoo Finance names optometry as a profession that offers a low-stress work life while also offering a median salary of at least $100,000.
 
ASCO announces a theme edition of the journal Optometric Education (https://journal.opted.org) that will be dedicated to global optometric education. It is with deep sadness to report that Dr. Richard Hill, Dean Emeritus of The Ohio State College of Optometry passed away on Tuesday, June 20 at home under hospice care due to Parkinson’s disease.
 
On May 24th and June 1st respectively, the Chicago College of Optometry (CCO) and the Arizona College of Optometry (AZCOPT) held commencement ceremonies to celebrate the accomplishments of the classes of 2023. CCO honored 51 graduates earning a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, and the Arizona College of Optometry conferred the same degree to 56 graduates.
 
For those who haven’t heard the “Nyman Story According to Sue O,” track down Susan Oleszewski, OD ‘76, Resident ‘78, MA, FAAO, and ask her to share it.
 
The UAB School of Optometry’s first graduating class marked its 50th anniversary. Bernie Scott, OD, Michael Scott, OD, and Ron Dachelet, OD, members of the 1973 class, attended the 2023 Convocation and Hooding Ceremony to recognize this milestone.
 
Congratulations to Siu G. Wong (OD Class of 1970), for receiving the American Optometric Association’s (AOA) Hall of Fame Award! The National Optometry Hall of Fame recognizes and honors optometrists who have made significant and long-lasting contributions to the optometric profession.
 
According to Susan Oleszewski, OD ‘76, Resident ‘78, MA, FAAO, one has a lot of good ideas in a lifetime. But they don’t always turn out like one would want.
