The Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO) announces Eye Opener Sessions, a complement to ASCO’s public awareness campaign, Optometry Gives Me Life.

With the Fall approaching, it’s a great time to revisit ASCO’s virtual cultural competency training workshop and toolkit. The workshop and toolkit are part of its Eye on Diversity Initiative, which is generously sponsored by Johnson & Johnson Vision.
 
ASCO announces a theme edition of the journal Optometric Education (https://journal.opted.org) that will be dedicated to global optometric education. ASCO welcomes manuscript submissions that highlight research, curricula, pedagogy, public health initiatives, and other projects that align with the theme edition’s mission of sharing ongoing efforts to advance the profession of optometry worldwide.
 
The Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry offers a Career Center resource, hosted by Boxwood.

Nancy Coletta, OD, PhD, FAAO, FARVO has been appointed permanent Dean of the MCPHS University School of Optometry, effective September 11, 2023. This permanent appointment follows Dr. Coletta’s most recent role as interim Dean of the School of Optometry since June 2022, and her prior appointment as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs in 2019.
 
This summer, 4th Year Doctor of Optometry student, Mihret Girum, was awarded the inaugural Empowering Equity Scholarship, an award through a partnership between VSP Vision and Black EyeCare Perspective.
 
The Arizona College of Optometry (AZCOPT) welcomed the Class of 2027 to Midwestern University’s Glendale Campus on August 21st. The new first-year students participated in a week-long orientation program to introduce them to the various resources on campus available to support them in professional school.
 
Klaesyn Sibless wanted to become an optometrist because one of her cousins was born blind. But thanks to a couple of surgeries and extensive vision therapy, he’s now able to see out of one eye. “I wanted to be able to provide that kind of care to people,” she said.
 
Katherine Weise, OD, MBA, FAAO, UAB School of Optometry professor, has been accepted into the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s Committee as an Expert in Myopia.
 
The Optometry Admissions Test (OAT) is designed to assess candidates’ knowledge base and aptitude in several key content areas relevant to optometry school curriculum. Currently, no optometry program in the country offers a prep course for the OAT. But, the Pennsylvania College of Optometry (PCO) at Salus University is about to change that.
 
Dr. Theresa Cassidy, Assistant Professor at Southern College of Optometry, spends her weekends volunteering at the Memphis Zoo.
