Raising the Level of Numeracy and Preparing Students for Success in High School and Beyond

All students deserve the opportunity to succeed in mathematics whether they are beginning high school, post-secondary education, or graduating into life beyond school. However, there is clear evidence that many students do not possess the necessary numeracy skills required to succeed in their math courses or to participate as a successful member of a 21 st century society. By providing students with the right tools and support, the gap that exists between the numeracy skills they have and the ones they require has been proven to close. As a result of 10 years of funded research in the areas of student achievement in mathematics, the 24 Ontario publicly funded colleges in collaboration with the 72 school boards developed a unique Assessment-for-Learning platform called OCMT. The OCMT was field tested with over 10,000 students at 16 colleges and 112 secondary schools in Ontario. Through funding received from the Ontario Centres of Excellence, the OCMT was adapted and introduced for students in Grade 9 mathematics and also for students transitioning from Grade 8 to Grade 9. For the past four years, the OCMT has been increasing student achievement and engagement through the integrated use of digitally rich diagnostic, formative and summative resources that connect abstract math concepts to their practical applications. During this session, participants will not only learn more about the OCMT tools and the ways in which they are being used by various groups in Ontario, but they will also have the opportunity to engage with the app and learn first-hand that learning math can both be meaningful and enjoyable. Trial access to the platform will be provided to all participants.
