Getting Social
What to Expect
Here's a quick breakdown of the four big social media platforms right now and how colleges are using them to share information:
- Instagram is the best platform to follow if you prefer pictures over words. Colleges use their reels, stories, and visual posts to highlight campus events, students, and initiatives. Expect to see a lot of high-energy content on Instagram.
- Facebook and X are often used to bring attention to college events and accomplishments. Check these platforms to learn about college athletics, school-sponsored groups, and community-building opportunities being held by your college.
- LinkedIn has a more corporate focus, with posts about the college's larger impact beyond their campus. LinkedIn showcases areas like new college-employer partnerships, cutting-edge research, and cultural connections. You can also find job postings, spotlights on faculty, and alumni success stories.
Many colleges are also on Threads and Discord, so search for your school whenever you sign on to a new social network!
Keep it Healthy
Just like everything, make sure to use social media in moderation. Beyond being a distraction from your schoolwork, it can have a negative effect on your mental health.
Here are a few tips and tricks to save yourself from social media burnout:
- View other people's posts as inspiration rather than competition/comparison ? It's great seeing all the amazing things people are sharing on social media. Just remember that they're only sharing the highlights of their lives and they only share what they want you to see. Keep some perspective as you look at social media ? you'll feel better if you do.
- Schedule time to use social media ? Set time aside to browse your accounts but keep it short and sweet. If you're having a hard time cutting back on your scrolling, use your phone settings ? on both iOS or Android ? to block notifications and limit the usage of specific apps.
- Be mindful of where you source information ? When looking for important information, it's best to speak with your college directly. Forums like Reddit, Discord, etc., may have spaces devoted to your college. But remember, everyone can weigh in on your question. Their answers ? no matter how well-intended ? could be outdated or incorrect. Speaking to your college is the best way to ensure you get the correct information.
- Put your mental health first ? If you notice that social media is affecting your mood, take a break. Reach out to health services on your local campus, if needed. Take care of yourself.
