The Ontario Veterinary Medical Association (OVMA) is excited to announce the launch of the Future Veterinarian Bursaries, designed to support equity-deserving high school students interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. These bursaries aim to break down financial barriers that have historically limited diversity within the profession, as highlighted by findings from OVMA’s research. By providing financial assistance at a critical time in their educational journey, we hope to encourage and empower a more diverse generation of future veterinarians.

Looking for a job isn’t easy at the best of times. But for jobseekers from underrepresented groups in the labour market, including individuals with disabilities, women and racialized persons, it can mean overcoming additional barriers in order to find and keep employment. PTP Adult Learning and Employment Programs (PTP), a non-profit organization with two locations in Toronto, Ontario, understands the very real impact these barriers have on jobseekers. For more than 30 years, PTP has delivered training and employment services that create pathways to work for those facing literacy and other barriers to employment. Well over half of PTP’s clients are women, and more than three-quarters are racialized.
There is no doubt that partnerships often require a lot of effort and time. Starting a partnership might also seem complicated because of: - Limited resources - Limited capacity - Layers of management that must be kept informed However, a successful partnership can enhance both parties' organizational effectiveness and efficiency by: - Allowing the sharing of expertise - Exchanging knowledge - Filling gaps in services and programs This case study highlights a successful partnership between a: - Post-secondary institution — George Brown College - Community-based employment service provider — Pathway to Possibilities (PTP) Initiated in 2021, the partnership aimed to enhance the outcomes of the College Vocational program at George Brown College — a one-year Ontario College Certificate program in the Center for Preparatory and Liberal Studies, for students with intellectual disabilities — and fill a gap these students experienced during the transition from school to work. By evaluating this partnership roadmap, this case study explores the success factors of the partnership and how the partnership enhanced the program, student success, and the operation of the partner organizations.
According to Statistics Canada, women in Canada only hold about a third (35.6%) of management occupations and 31% of senior management-level occupations. Research shows gender stereotyping in education and the work world starts at a very early age. Children as young as seven risk ruling out future job options because of their gender, race and background, according to the OECD’s Director of Education and Skills Andreas Schleicher. Gender stereotypes affect young people’s view of their identity and their educational and career aspirations. They are woven into every aspect of our lives, from the choice of a child’s toy to the subjects that we encourage students to pursue based on their gender. Inspired by Education and Employers’ highly successful Redraw the Balance video, I decided to organize an experiment in my role as Career Education Co-ordinator for the Greater Victoria School District. With the support of teachers and with a film crew on hand to document the results, I had a class of Grade 3s from Braefoot Elementary participate in an activity to see how much gender bias was in this B.C. classroom.
When applying to postsecondary education, students and parents can find themselves grappling with the weighty decision of selecting the right program. We often assume that this important decision will open the door to a singular occupation that will determine the future of our entire career. However, the reality is that most careers are not linear, and the skills and knowledge gained from various academic disciplines can be applied to an array of occupations.
