The Right Kind of Wrong - Supporting Our Students in Purposeful Failure

In this webinar presented by Jay Gosselin, coach, facilitator, speaker, and founder of MentorU and Discover Year, we will delve into the psychology of failure and resilience. Resilience is like a muscle - it needs to be exercised to get stronger. As Guidance educators, supporting our students through the failures and success in their lives, is something that we do on a regular basis. As adults, we understand that some failure is essential for human growth and development, but many times, this is a difficult concept for our students to adopt. At the same time, we don’t want to encourage our students to make unnecessary, careless mistakes. In this session, we will explore various types of failures and share strategies that can help students to get comfortable with failure while striving for success.

Learning outcomes:

• Outline different types of failure as identified in research in psychology
• Explore ways to support students in embracing useful failures and lifelong learning

Learn industry proven practices that will lead to quicker training, more effective and productive staff and improved safety and quality standards.

In last week’s article, "The Story of Job Interviews and Assessments," we dug into the history of interviews and the biases they can introduce. This sparked an important question, so we took it to you in a poll: Do you think the system of interviewing should be thrown out completely? After 267 votes and insightful comments, here’s what we found:

- Yes – 47%
- No – 44%
- Other – 9%

While opinions varied, one thing was clear from the comments: change is necessary. Whether that means a complete overhaul or a focused revamp, most agree that traditional interviews, as they stand, are riddled with bias and don’t always reflect a candidate’s true skills. The comments dug deeper into the reasons behind this split, revealing frustrations and constructive ideas on what needs to change.

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) is pleased to be hosting Ontario’s Youth Video Contest: Safety in the Workplace!

This video contest encourages youth to create and submit an original, two-minute video that showcases the importance of working safely on the job.

To be eligible, contestants must be:

- An Ontario resident
- Aged 13-19
- Attending an Ontario secondary school or community centre program across Ontario

The winner will be awarded $1000 for themselves and $1000 for their school or community centre. The winner will also go on to compete in the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety’s national Youth Video Contest.

The contest closes on Friday, February 21, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.

This is an excellent opportunity to get youth in Ontario thinking about occupational health and safety. We encourage you to please share this contest with any educators or youth in your networks and add notice of it to any news bulletins to your members.
