The Right Kind of Wrong - Supporting Our Students in Purposeful Failure
Tuesday, January 28th at 10:00 AM

In this webinar presented by Jay Gosselin, coach, facilitator, speaker, and founder of MentorU and Discover Year, we will delve into the psychology of failure and resilience. Resilience is like a muscle - it needs to be exercised to get stronger. As Guidance educators, supporting our students through the failures and success in their lives, is something that we do on a regular basis. As adults, we understand that some failure is essential for human growth and development, but many times, this is a difficult concept for our students to adopt. At the same time, we don't want to encourage our students to make unnecessary, careless mistakes. In this session, we will explore various types of failures and share strategies that can help students to get comfortable with failure while striving for success.

Learning outcomes:

  • Outline different types of failure as identified in research in psychology
  • Explore ways to support students in embracing useful failures and lifelong learning

Education
Climate is one of the most significant issues of our time, reshaping economies, societies and individual lives. In this context, career counselling and education play a critical role in equipping people to cope with uncertainty and navigate these changes. As global efforts intensify to mitigate and adapt to climate change, career development professionals are uniquely positioned to help clients meet the demands of this evolving landscape.

This requires thinking beyond "green jobs" and integrating climate considerations into every aspect of our career practice, emphasizing sustainability, adaptation, decent work, mental health and well-being. Career Construction Theory (CCT), particularly its concept of career adaptability (Savickas ,1997; Savickas & Porfeli, 2012), offers a strong foundation for resourcing our clients in the context of the climate crisis.

Non-Status Indigenous Peoples face unique challenges when it comes to employment. Unlike Status Indians, they don’t have access to the same government programs and services, which can make it harder to find the support they need to enter into the labour force. The lasting impacts of colonialism have also created barriers that continue to affect their career opportunities. As a result, Non-Status Indigenous Peoples often struggle with lower employment rates and wages compared to their non-Indigenous counterparts.

In this article, we’ll explore how career practitioners can be key allies in helping break down these barriers, offering solutions for financial and education challenges that can empower Non-Status Indigenous Peoples on their career journeys.
