Fall is my favourite season! As a visual learner, I truly appreciate the splendour of autumn’s palette bursting through the green: brilliant reds, yellows, and oranges, along gusty winds, cool nights and warm days, envelope me in a familiar hug. These environmental changes remind me that, like the earth which always changing, moving forward and renewing, so too are we as guidance counsellor-teachers. I invite you to renew your OSCA/ACOSO membership at the greatly reduced rate of $50. As members, registration is FREE for our much-anticipated, fall virtual conference: FORWARD21 – Moving from Chaos to Opportunity, on October 14th and 15th. Visit our website to renew your membership, register for the conference, and download the conference guide. We are very excited to hear our keynote speakers, Michel Chikwanine (inspirational speaker/former child soldier) and Kevin Lamoureux (leader in Indigenous issues and anti-racist education), as well as to learn from our many exceptional workshop presenters and exhibitors!

Are you interested in a fabulous professional development opportunity? Would you like to develop your skills while leading our profession into the future? Your Board of Directors needs YOU! We are looking for guidance counsellor-teachers who are interested in joining us to promote guidance and career education in Ontario. Please join us at our virtual annual general meeting at the end of Day 1 of the conference to learn more.

Warm wishes for a wonderful October,

The past few years haven’t always been kind to oil and gas workers: Almost overnight, commodity prices would crash, triggering layoffs in droves, but then just as quickly, prices would turn around and workers fell into short supply.

That volatile cycle has been playing on repeat since 2014 to the point that industry groups now say oil and gas workers are searching for jobs in more stable sectors.

But where exactly? ‘Green’ jobs — loosely defined as positions tied to reducing carbon emissions — have been held up as a new economic driver that could offset oil and gas job losses. While the ‘green sector’ may eventually surpass the fossil fuel sector in terms of number of jobs, efforts to decarbonize the economy are only just starting. For now, green jobs is still a new area, for which workers may need retraining, and where positions may not offer the same level of pay and benefits as traditional oil and gas jobs.
