December - the month with the longest day of the year set against the backdrop of a crisp white snow landscape…or the possibility of it any way. Whatever December means for you, I hope you are well!  Please remember to take time for yourself to relax, whether it be listening to your favourite music, reading a book, or playing with your grandchildren; do whatever you find relaxing for yourself.  This will be my last blog as your president as I hand the reign over to your Vice-President team. Thank you all for this opportunity to lead our organization through the pandemic of 2021 - I wish you all the best in 2022 as we continue towards opening to in-person events.

The Respect in School program is an online bullying, abuse, harassment, and discrimination (BAHD) prevention training tool, developed for School Leaders: teachers, administrators, EAs, counsellors, custodians, school bus drivers, parent volunteers, senior students or any individuals who interact with students.

Respect Group was recently commissioned by the Ontario Ministry of Education to create some critical tools to assist youth (14 and up) with the many mental health issues they face as they return to school, sport and activity during this unprecedented time.

Through close collaboration with our friends at Kids Help Phone we have created these free Mental Health Chats.
The Olive Diefenbaker Award of Merit is presented to a retiring teacher-counsellor, teacher, administrator, trustee and/or member of the community.

Congratulations to Lesley!

Apprenticeships provide Canadians with a unique opportunity to learn practical skills and gain valuable work experience while earning money at the same time. Apprentices spend some of their time completing technical training and most of their time working under the supervision of a skilled journeyperson who can provide coaching and mentoring.

This reflection tool is designed for educators to consider the elements of a Mentally Healthy Classroom. Furthermore, it helps educators explore components within the first tier of the AIM Model that include strategies for creating an inclusive classroom environment.

Education
What are soft skills and why does the language we use to describe them matter?

"An HR specialist gave a presentation to a class of engineering students about job readiness. As she started to describe the "soft skills" they would need to succeed in the workplace, she felt their attention slipping. She wondered how she could change her language to make the group take the presentation more seriously: after all, skills like collaboration and time management were crucial for their ability to succeed professionally."

Context
At ICTC, a portion of our work consists of labour market research in the digital economy. We are also a capacity building organization, meaning that we strive to better prepare the workforce for the digital economy. In this work, "skills" are often a central topic. What skills do employees need to succeed? What skillsets do employers have trouble hiring? What new skills will allow people to work more effectively?

Each year during the month of November, there’s a celebration across the country. It doesn’t matter what time zone you’re in, or if you work or are affiliated with the field of career development. It’s not about thinking bigger than you’ve ever thought before. This month is about small steps that that make a big impact. November is Canada Career Month – the best time to join a conversation nationally about careers, collaborate with other professionals in the field of career development and make the biggest splash from coast to coast to coast.
