February OSCA Message - Julie Fantinato

River

It’s February 2022, we are still in a pandemic, and it is February...it is cold outside, the sun barely gets to peek out from behind grey clouds, and as Ontarians we are surely getting tired of all of the snow. Due to the lockdowns, I have been finding myself hunkering down in my condo and getting cozy with my husband and pets. I did not realize this behaviour actually has a name - Hygge (pronounced "hoo-ga”). It is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well being, regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture.” The Danish word does not really translate well to English, it suggests a
general sense of comfort, charm, simplicity, and community.

In The Little Book of Hygge, Wiking, who explores the causes and effects of human happiness, describes how hygge can include: atmosphere, being present, pleasure, gratitude, comfort, and togetherness. Wiking suggests the concept of hygge is about gratitude and savouring the simple pleasures that bring you joy.

Hygge can mean something different to everyone, I suggest you find out what your definition of hygge is and get Hygge-ing.

Apprenticeship is a form of post-secondary education like university or college. But there’s a big difference:
Apprentices not only learn skills in a classroom, but receive paid, on?-the-?job training with your employer/sponsor.

YOU CAN EARN WHILE YOU LEARN!

80% of apprenticeship training happens on-?the-?job with your employer and the other 20% is completed in-school over two 12-week winter semesters. Discover the Horticultural Technician 441C Apprenticeship Program, a Red Seal trade in Ontario for the horticulture and landscaping profession.

Carbon reduction could change the economy as well as create new jobs across the region.

If any bioregion is well-suited to streak towards a net-zero carbon emissions economy, it would seem to be Cascadia. British Columbia, Washington and Oregon set some of North America’s first mandates to reduce greenhouse gas emissions over a decade ago. Abundant hydropower provides an edge, and most voters in all three places say they want to transition away from fossil fuels.

Getting to zero of course would require heavy political lifting. Progress so far has come in fits and starts. But if the climate crisis is to be averted, greenhouse gas emissions must be dramatically reduced. And Dr. Jennie Moore, who directs British Columbia Institute of Technology’s Institute Sustainability, points out that would bring big changes to the world of work.
