OSCA News - March"The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another. The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month.” Well, friends, as Henry Van Dyke would say, welcome to March. We look forward to sunshine, buds, and blossoms only to be hit with one more wallop of snow and polar winds. It looks like Mother Nature also has difficulty coping with change. The whole world has been dealing with change for exactly two years since our very first lockdown due to COVID-19. As Guidance Counsellors, we have been pivoting so much we are ready for our very own ballet solo. OSCA/ACOSO is incredibly proud of all of you for continuing to serve your students with their Pathway choices, individual counselling, course selection, Social-Emotional and Mental Health programming. We at OSCA/ACOSO are certain Ontario’s students would not have been able to get through these two years without our Elementary and Secondary Guidance-Teacher Counsellors. Once again, THANK YOU!

Although career development theories underline the central role of information in career choice and studies show that guidance practitioners are among the main information sources of people making career choices, the actual information practices of these practitioners in their career interventions remain fragmented. Moreover, the studies on the theme of career choice associating information, information sources and information practices (whether it is among guidance practitioners or individuals in career choice) offer little conceptualization on these notions.

It’s not every day you hear about a high school student interested in entering the funeral business, but Christine McKie, Principal at Crowsnest Consolidated High School in Alberta, can tell you about two. At the rural Alberta school, students are exposed to professionals across a wide range of careers, from pharmacists to pilots to – yes – funeral directors. What McKie calls a "human library" of professional connections, cultivated by divisional Career Practitioner Lettie Croskery, is only one part of Crowsnest’s commitment to preparing its roughly 280 students for life outside of school. In addition to job shadowing, individual career guidance and industry presentations, the school has spread the provincially mandated careers course over three years, so that students have weekly exposure to career-related learning.
