Career Opportunities
Events & Fundraising Specialist Spotlight
Danielle Thomas has been in the hospitality industry for nearly 10 years. The best career advice she has ever received was to never stop learning.
Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Danielle's favorite vacation spot is anywhere with family. Her favorite food is southern comfort food, and her favorite type of music is hip-hop and R&B. Some of her pet peeves are "reply-all" emails and unprotected coughs and sneezes.
If money wasn't an object, her dream job would be meeting planning. Danielle says that when she was younger she didn't know what meeting and event planning was; she just knew that she loved organizing people getting together and having the group experience.
Amy Doty has been planning meetings and events, big and small, for close to 15 years for the forest, conservation and sustainability sectors. She came to meeting planning by chance after taking a position with a forestry association. Her career goals at the time were focused on forest policy and sustainability. However, she quickly grew a passion for meetings and events and convening individuals around issues of importance to the forest, conservation and sustainability sectors.
On April 1, Amy began a meeting and event management consulting business called Meetings and Such (www.meetingsandsuch.com). She is excited for the opportunities ahead with this new venture and looks forward to helping these same sectors convene face to face post-COVID-19. The best career advice she has received is "see each challenge or obstacle as an opportunity." She says, "Case in point — starting a new meeting planning business in the midst of a pandemic. However I'm using this challenging time for professional development, studying for my CMP exam in August and learning everything there is to know about virtual events."
Coronavirus Dialogue Series: Medical Meetings, Post COVID-19 Medical meetings have mostly cancelled, postponed or have been converted into virtual meetings in 2020 due to the novel coronavirus crisis. In recent weeks, many of our peers are undergoing significant transformations— changing how staffers communicate, adding necessary flexibility in responding and adapting to new demands for meeting formats and styles, cancelling and rescheduling contracts — all while navigating complex compliance laws and regulations.
