SP Newsprint Mills Earn FSC, PEFC, SFI Certification

SP Newsprint Co., Greenwich, Conn., USA, announced this past week that its Dublin, Ga., and Newberg, Ore., newsprint mills have achieved Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Chain-of-Custody certifications. These certifications track FSC, PEFC, and SFI certified material through the chain of custody process, from the fiber sources to the consumer, including all successive stages of processing, transformation, manufacturing, and distribution. The 100% recycled products from these mills, totaling 760,000 metric tons annually, can now carry a label confirming that they were made from certified post-consumer sources.
"Having FSC, PEFC, and SFI Chain-of-Custody certification at both of our Newsprint mills assures our customers of the company's commitment to show responsible stewardship of environmental resources," said Christopher Brant, president and COO. With this announcement, SP Newsprint - Dublin mill will now be the largest FSC, PEFC, and SFI certified 100% recycled newsprint mill in North America.
SP Newsprint is the fourth largest newsprint manufacturer in North America, with approximately 900,000 metric tpy of newsprint production capacity. In addition to the mills in Dublin and Newberg, the company operates 22 recycling facilities through its subsidiary, SP Recycling Corp.
